MY COMMENTS This
recording is a CD re-release of Messiah by the London Philharmonic
Orchestra and Choir. The original LP release in 1979 consisted of a 4 record
set. (I have been playing from the Eastman Chorale version of Messiah, released
by WORD Records in 1984, on Old Christian Radio since the station has been on
the air.) I'm glad that Sparrow Records re-released this recording in a 2 CD set so
I can play it on the air and make it available for the purchase to the listeners of Old Christian
Radio.
The message inside the CD cover reads... While
George Frederick Handel will be remembered as one of classical music's premier
composers, a wealthy yet generous man, this was not always the life he lived.
Handel struggled for years with financial hardship and failure, once even
threatened with debtors prison.
Known universally for his generosity and concern for
those who suffered, Handel donated freely to charities even in times when he
faced personal financial ruin. Although faced with disaster throughout his life,
he was a relentless optimist whose faith in God sustained him through very
difficulty. The story behind his masterpiece, Messiah, reflects Handel's
generosity.
Commissioned by a Dublin charity wanting a piece to use
at a benefit concert, the first performance was April 13, 1742. Over 400 pounds
were raised, enough to free 142 men from debtor's prison.
Handel personally conducted more than thirty
performances of Messiah Many of these concerts were benefits for the
Foundling Hospital, of which Handel was a major benefactor. The thousands of
pounds Handel's Performances of Messiah raised for charity led one
biographer to note: "Messiah has fed the hungry, clothed the naked,
fostered the orphan more than any other single musical production in this or any
other country." Taken from - The Spiritual Lives of Great Composers, 1992,
Sparrow Press, written by Patrick Kavanaugh.
The Messiah is a cornerstone recording in the
history of Sparrow Records. As executive producer, Billy Ray Hearn's intention
was to make this 1979 recording more friendly to the "man in the pew"
by using a choral conductor, John Alldis, and modern orchestration. There was no
attempt to be authentic or "purist". The purpose was to show this to
be the greatest praise and worship composition ever. Billy Ray Hearn
poured his passion for classical music into this and other classic projects such
as Hymns Triumphant
and Majesty
and Glory. We would like to continue in the "spirit" of Handel's
Messiah this year as we re-launch this timeless testimony to God's goodness and
faithfulness.
