MY COMMENTS This
recording is a re-release of old Hymns Triumphant series. Volume 1 is the one
that I have been playing on Old Christian Radio since this station has been on
the air. Each volume was a two record set. (Total of 4 records for both volumes).
This one is also one of my favorite recordings in my library that I personally
love to listen to. I'm glad that Sparrow Records re-released it in a 2 CD set so
I can make it available for the purchase to the listeners of Old Christian
Radio.
Volume 1's individual songs were divided as themes. When I
played music from Volume 1... I would combine a theme's respective group of
songs together and played them as one track. This is because many of the
individual songs were often too short for "single song" air play. Also,
the original records did not divide the songs nor the themes. I had to find the
dividing lines and break them up as themes when I made a CD master (of Volume 1)
for the station library.
Volume II has it's song themes divided as individual
tracks.
The message inside the CD cover reads... Selecting
particular sacred songs for the Hymns Triumphant Series has proven to be at once
more private and yet less personal that I first thought it would be. The process
of choosing the hymns refuses to remain a simple selection of personal favorites
for very long. Very quickly, more connected currents of thought come to direct
the flow. These currents inevitably reflect themes that have always been close
to the surface of this vast hymn reservoir through the ages - a reservoir of
musical and spiritual inspiration that is always renewing itself.
Hymn singing - regardless of the scale of its setting - remains an
ever-meaningful worship experience for every Christian. Whether it is a small
family gathered around an old upright piano, or a huge congregation flanked by a
grand pipe organ and massive choir, the intensity of the expression is of the
same high level. Hymns offer praise and thanksgiving to God, reflecting man's
most spiritual feelings in a triumphant celebration of worship.
Hymns Triumphant I is that kind of celebration, carried to a
grand symphonic level, yet never tempering with the traditional melodies and
harmonies of the hymns it encompasses. A full orchestra and a trained 100-voice
choir perform them here in unifying medleys, relating each to a thought
perfectly expressed in "The Lord's Prayer". Grand orchestral
introductions, endings and transitional passages thus frame, with artistic
beauty, the basic structure of each traditional expression of worship to form
one body of work we call a "symphonic choral suite". This Lee
Holdridge-arranged work reflects its fullest glory, however, when used as a
setting for a participatory hymn sing-a-long. For its intended audience to none
other than God. And His living worship is the ultimate triumphant performance.
With Hymns Triumphant II, each medley of hymns came to express
a particular triumph -- The Triumph of the Christian Life. This specific theme
has been even triumphed over time itself. One of the hymns here survives from
the 8th century. While many of these selections are 18th and 19th century
American hymns, it is my hope that Volume II will triumph over distance as well
- serving as a setting for sing-a-long participation. Lee Holdridge's
orchestrations once again lend to a contemporary dignity of classic proportions
to these hymns of the church. The Christian world chares both a common and yet
uncommon heritage of triumph in our hymns. I invite you to share it again and
again through the timeless examples of all our highest hopes and deepest
inspirations.
