The message
inside the CD cover
reads... Dr. J. Richard Szeremany serves the Second Presbyterian Church of Newark, New Jersey, in a unique role -- he is the congregation's preaching minister as well as organist and choir director. As a musician, he possess the amazing ability to bring out a rich variety of tones from the organ and can improvise hymns without prior thought or practice. When working with this gifted artist, our staff gives him a packet of selections at the start of the recording session. Dr Szeremany takes three or four minutes to contemplate the meaning of the text and set registrations before telling us to start the tape. His on-the-spot arrangements reflect an authority gained from many years of service playing as well as a deep feeling for the message behind the music which is best summarized by the following comment from a listener, "As an organist, Dr. Szeremany plays the instrument the way a preacher would proclaim 'THUS SAITH THE LORD.'" Longwood
Gardens, located at Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, is renowned for magnificent
gardens featuring 14,000 varieties of plants. Music has always been a part of
Longwood's tradition and concerts are held regularly. The organ was built in
1930 by the Aeolian Company and has not been tonally altered over the years.
Considered to be one of the finest remaining orchestral organs, the instrument
has 10,010 pipes, 250 stops and couplers, five thirty-two foot pedal stops, 364
percussion tones, and a nine-foot concert grand piano. From the standpoint of
digital recording, the organ speaks directly into the hall from a chamber 63
feet wide, 23 feet deep, and 40 feet high, and the listener hears the full
effect of the instrument's tremendous power. We are grateful to the staff at
Longwood for their cordial hospitality and wish to express special thanks to
Colvin Randall and Robert Goodchild for making this recording possible.
