Gordon And Jean Greer -- Soldiers Of The Cross
Thou therefore, my son, be
strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And Watch ye, stand fast in the
faith, quit you like men, be strong Wherefore
take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may by able to withstand Therefore,
my brethren dearly beloved and longed for, NOTE: The CD cover insert contains brief biographical sketches and famous quotes of the of the following men (listed below). Pastor
John Ashbrook (May 1926-Present) Lewis Carl (our graphic artist for this project) suggested that he and I walk through the Bob Jones University Museum and Gallery to look for cover design ideas among the wonderful sacred art pieces in the collection there. (If you have not yet visited the art gallery there, we certainly recommend that you do so.) Edward Matthew Ward's 1868 painting entitled Martin Luther Discovering Justification By Faith nearly leapt from the wall of the gallery in its powerful expression of the exact spirit of courage I sought. In it, Ward captures the very inception of Luther's understanding of the saving truth of "sola fide, sola scriptura." Even in the very angle of the monk's head - as if in one brief moment of time - the painter seems to have captured Dr. Martin Luther comprehending, as it were, not only God's plan and offer of Salvation by faith alone but also the needful future posting of his now famous 95 Theses, the looming danger of the Diet of Worms, and his inevitable need to make his stand there as a "soldier of the cross." Notice the use of the light in this painting - the so-called chiaroscuro technique. The emphasis is on the very Word of God itself and the futility of trying to find the answers in any other source. One may quibble about Martin Luther and what he did or did not do or should have done in his exodus as a separatist from Catholicism. I prefer to view this great "soldier" as a man who went in obedience to the Word pf Gad as far as the "light of Scripture" took him in HIS day against the very power that was Rome. That is an appropriate thought and test for each of us who name the Name of Christ in OUR day. What will history record of our individual stand for the Word of the Living God and Jesus Christ Who died for our sins? --Gordon Greer Special thanks to Brother Duane Ream for his able and faithful assistance throughout the production of this musical offering for the glory of God. Orchestral Players: The Greers wish to express their gratitude to the following musicians (music, faculty members and current or former student members of the Bob Jones University Orchestra) who collaborated on this recording. Often these individuals go unrecognized on recordings, but without their talents and devotion to their art, we would certainly be unable to offer something of quality unto the Lord with orchestral accompaniment. A special thanks to Brother Achim Gerber (at the time of the recording he was playing professionally in Germany) fo9r his fine Viola playing and professionalism before the students. It is great joy for us to be able to tell each one of you that to the best of our knowledge, no one has participated on this recording who does not know the Lord Jesus Christ as his or her personal Saviour. Savior First Of All CD Cover) During their years in Europe, both Gordon and Jean dedicated their lives and musical talents to Jesus Christ, having already trusted Him as their Savior. God moved in a personal way in Jean's heart in 1982, and she began seeking guidance from the Lord through consistent daily Bible reading and prayer. Gordon was also under great conviction at that time. In 1984, he was introduced to Biblical Fundamentalism while singing at Bob Jones University. Gordon was challenged with taking a balanced position of Scriptural separation from the world in all facets of life. Sharing this direction of the Lord with his wife upon returning to Europe, the Greers decided to move back to America in 1985. Their first fundamental church home was at Bethel Baptist Church in Schaumburg, Illinois. This is where Jean taught in the Christian school and Gordon began traveling to churches and conferences singing the Gospel. The Greers thank the Lord for the solid foundation of Bible truth preached by their former pastor, Dr. Frank Bumpus, and taught by the faculty of the Schaumburg Bible Institute, which they attended faithfully for three years. the Lord began to open the door to the music ministry for which Gordon and Jean had been praying (for) in 1986. God has directed their paths to solid, fundamental churches where they share their testimonies and love for Jesus Christ while 'singing for souls'. The Greers desire to be faithful examples in their selection and performance of music which praises and honors God: They are enemies of the so-called Christian Contemporary Music and speak forthrightly about their position based upon the Word of God. Having left the entertainment world to serve the Lord in a ministry o music, Gordon and Jean will appreciate your prayers for God's continued leading in their lives. Currently residing in Greenville, South Carolina, Gordon is available for meetings in churches throughout the year while Jean teaches voice on the faculty of Bob Jones University and travels when possible with Gordon to minister in song to the Lord's people. The Greers have three children (Rebecca, Andrew, and Rachelle). They are members of the Faith Baptist Church (Dr. John Vaughn, Pastor), and Gordon is actively affiliated with the Fundamental Baptist Fellowship of America. Gordon and Jean Greer have traveled extensively with Dr. Bob Jones III to BJU Friendship Banquets around the United States, presenting mini-concerts as part of a program to raise funds for needy students at the university. They have sung at Bible conferences, camps, retreats, and pastors' conferences, as well as for artist series programs at fundamental Christian colleges. The Greers have also been invited for master classes in vocal production and performance.
