Alan McGill, Baritone -- The Way Of The Cross + Through The Years The message inside the CD cover reads... He was awarded a vocal scholarship at age 16 and trained under Baltimore's renowned A. Lee Jones, until entering the Army during World War II at age 21. SACRED RECORDS INC. founded by earl E. Williams, Ph.D., offered him a recording contract in 1949 which began his Christian Recording career. He was under contract to them for 11 years. Later, his recordings were on CAPITOL, WORD, ZONDERVAN, SUPREME, and CHRISTIAN MELODY USA labels. In addition to many 78 and 45 RPM single records, including the best-selling Sacred record "Each Step Of The Way" (composed by his friend Redd Harper), his albums totaled 23. The lyrics to "Thank You Lord" (song #6 were composed by Alan's late wife Nancy (1928-1984), and the music by here late mother Katherine Gilpin (1907-1996). Both ladies were pianists. During the 30 years of their marriage, Nancy traveled with Alan as his piano accompanist until the progression of her multiple sclerosis prevented it. Many McGill records were among the most popular Christian recordings in all of the English-speaking countries, and quite a few are still used on radio broadcasts around the world. His voice has NOT changed with aging, and continues to be a blessing to many, in a most unusual way (for which he give God the credit.). In January 1993, Alan married his current wife Jean (widowed in January 1989). They were scheduled regularly for their 60 to 90 minute informal, doctrinally fundamental, conservative Gospel presentation, interwoven with Scripture and personal testimony. "Trust in the LORD with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy way acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths." -- Proverbs 3:5,6 The Way Of
The Cross This popular album was originally recorded in Hollywood's CAPITOL TOWER and released by CAPITOL RECORDS in the early 1960's when Alan was under contract to them. The record masters and recording rights were purchased from them by WORD RECORDS some years later and soon became one of their best sellers, with a new jacket and back-liner resume. WORD distributed it on LP record, eight-track tape, and cassette for quite some time, until it was finally purchased by Alan McGill to be released in the same three forms on the CHRISTIAN MELODY USA label. When LP records and eight-track tapes eventually met their demise universally, the album continued to be available on cassette, and is still selling well in Alan's personal church appearances and through the mail. For several years, many who prefer "music like it used to be" have inquired as to when his recordings will be available on CD. This interest sparked the decision to start remastering some of Alan's many recordings for release on CD. He decided to start with "THE WAY OF THE CROSS" (considered by some to be his best recording), coupled with another album for this initial CD-102 DOUBLE ALBUM introduction. If you like music the way "it used to be", we are quite certain you'll love this Double Album, and will be additionally pleased with this considerably discounted selling price. Sit back, relax and enjoy some pleasant listening! Digitally remastered by Jesse Kragiel Through The Years The songs on this album were assembled by WORD RECORDS some years ago from several different Alan McGill recordings previously released on other albums. Some were originally monaurally recorded (before stereo) and later electronically enhanced to pseudo-stereo status, while others were recorded originally in true stereo. There is an obvious variety in background accompaniment and in song selection as well, which has invoked many favorable comments and probably is at least partially responsible for its tremendous popularity through the years. Since Alan recorded many of these songs in the 1950's at to facilities in Hollywood, California (CAPITOL & RCA Studios, etc.), the recording quality of the master tape was unusually good, making this album well suited for digital remastering (with little change necessary). We believe you will be blessed by the selections and the McGill rendition of them... Most listeners are! Digitally remastered by Alan Richardson
