16 Singing Men -- Give Me Jesus
The message inside the CD cover reads... The group was organized around The Melody Four Quartet, Dick Anthony, the arranger and director, added three men on each part, selecting a pastor, several ministers of music, educators, businessmen, and radio personalities. Over a period of three decades, The Sixteen Singing Men recorded more than 15 LP albums--though the men individually and in ensembles have been involved in at least 150 feature records. Appearing on the weekend program of Radio Bible Class, with Richard De Haan, they were call the Men Of Music, and on Billy Graham's Hour Of Decision they were known as The Crusader Men. In concert halls, civic, auditoriums, colleges, and churches across the United States, the group presented variety programs that appealed to young and old alike. These concerts always began with this distinctive musical declaration: "We come with music that will warm your heart, a song of joy from the very start: Not to impress you or entertain you, but to remind you of heaven above." Then, in the attitude of worship, the men sang the opening song on this Discovery House Music recording, "Spirit Of God, Descend Upon My Heart." "Give Me Jesus", the title song of this digitally mastered collection, is the expression of the blind hymn writer Fanny J. Crosby and was set to music by John R. Sweney. The tune was sung fervently by congregations before the 20th century began and has endured for more than 100 years. As the Men sang, "Oh, the height and depth of mercy! Oh, the length and breadth of love! Oh, the fullness of redemption--Pledge of endless life and above." You may recognize these words as a paraphrase of Ephesians 3:17-21. Many stories could be told about the songs on this recording--their origins, their authors and composers, and the ways the Lord has used them to touch people's hearts and lives. "over the Sunset Mountains" by John W Peterson is one that has brought great blessing and comfort to thousands, but not many realize that its creation had a confirming influence in John's life and career. A secular publisher wanted to distribute it, saying he was sure it could reach the top of the "hit parade" and make John a very wealthy man. His only requirement was that the name of "Jesus" be dropped from the lyrics. Of course, John was not willing to "give up" the name of Jesus. the Lord honored his commitment, and that song, as well as three others by Peterson on this recording, has continued to honor the name of Jesus down through the years. All of us at RBC Ministries sincerely hope that "Give Me Jesus" will also be your response as you enjoy the songs on this recording. Produced and arranged by: Dick Anthony Art design by S.D.
